Bee Gees Star Sir Barry Gibb Receives His Knighthood From Prince William At Buckingham Palace

In our lifetime, we are likely to receive many honors, some large and some small. For some individuals, however, the honor they receive is one that is rarely ever given. Barry Gibb, one of the main singers from the Bee Gees received such an honor when he was knighted. Now, Sir Barry Gibb is joining an elite few that have received that honor from the King. At 71 years old, the Bee Gees star said that he hoped his late brothers were proud as he was collecting the knighthood from the Prince of Wales at Buckingham Palace. He was there with his family, including his son who looks a lot like him, Michael Gibb.

As the last surviving member of the Bee Gees, Sir Barry said: “If it was not for my brothers, I would not be here. “If I had spent my whole life writing songs on my own, it would have meant something else altogether. I hope and pray that they are aware of what has happened and that they are proud. I believe in that.” He also spoke about how he would’ve loved to have shared the day with his brothers. It was a day in which he was honored for his service to charity and music. Maurice Gibb was the first to pass away in 2003. He experienced complications after an operation to correct an intestinal blockage. His brother, Robin Gibb would die from cancer in 2012.

The Bee Gees is one of the most successful commercial bands of all time. They have hits that continue to be played on the radio many decades after they were written, including Jive Talking, Stayin Alive, and How Deep Is Your Love. Sir Barry said: “Working with Barbra Streisand and different artists has always been special for me. “I love to write for people. It is not just thinking, ‘Oh, I will write a song today’ but then when someone you admire asks you to write a song that is special motivation.” One of the things that surprised many people was the similarities in appearance between Sir Barry Gibb and his son, Michael.

At this time, Sir Barry is not quite used to his new title and finds it to be ‘a bit surreal.’ He then added: “It is a high award that your culture can give you and that is something I am enormously proud of.” He also spoke about his family’s success and said: “I think being relentless had a lot to do with it. When you are a kid and you make up your mind to do something. “You have got to have failure with a lot of success and I think that is what keeps you grounded.” He summed things up, saying: “You always start off by emulating somebody and that way you can find yourself and be inspired by other artists.”
